Gone Too Soon Photojournalism of Neverland at Night by Jonathan Haeber and Scott HaefnerAugust 29, 2010Curated by Kelly Seldan
In December 2007, Jonathan Haeber set out to photograph Neverland Ranch after a disturbing experience: I exited a theater to find what seemed like snow falling on me. I immediately realized they were large flakes of ash from a fire nearby. The sky was dark and orange. It was an eerie, foreboding signal
I needed to photograph Neverland, or else
it would all go to ashes without proper documentation.
Haeber and his comrade, Scott Haefner, spent three nights at Neverland, using improvised lighting, large format film and extremely long exposures to capture Michael Jacksons once illustrious park at night. Their colorful images of Michaels whimsical park-rides and artwork lit by the moon and carefully focused spotlights express the melancholy of an abandoned worldone that was meant for joy and laughter. What started out as an adventure to capture history resulted in a dramatic yet sensitive reflection on the wonder of Neverland and the hope and happiness Michael Jackson meant to create through the park. Haebers photos of Neverland were first posted on his site,
www.terrastories.com where it sparked intense emotion in Michael Jackson fans and critics from around the world.
