Gone Too Soon – Photojournalism of Neverland at Night by Jonathan Haeber and Scott Haefner
August 29, 2010

Curated by Kelly Seldan

In December 2007, Jonathan Haeber set out to photograph Neverland Ranch after a disturbing experience: “I exited a theater to find what seemed like snow falling on me. I immediately realized they were large flakes of ash from a fire nearby. The sky was dark and orange. It was an eerie, foreboding signal…I needed to photograph Neverland, or else…it would all go to ashes without proper documentation.”

Haeber and his comrade, Scott Haefner, spent three nights at Neverland, using improvised lighting, large format film and extremely long exposures to capture Michael Jackson’s once illustrious park at night. Their colorful images of Michael’s whimsical park-rides and artwork lit by the moon and carefully focused spotlights express the melancholy of an abandoned world—one that was meant for joy and laughter. What started out as an adventure to capture history resulted in a dramatic yet sensitive reflection on the wonder of Neverland and the hope and happiness Michael Jackson meant to create through the park. Haeber’s photos of Neverland were first posted on his site, www.terrastories.com where it sparked intense emotion in Michael Jackson fans and critics from around the world.

Open Space at Keys that Fit - An Installation by Kelly Seldan for the Oakland Art Murmur

Open Space is Southern California’s suburban landscape represented in the alcoves of Keys That Fit, Oakland.
July 1st-30th, 2010

Lush, green parks beautify upscale desert neighborhoods. They are regularly irrigated, well groomed, difficult to access and often unoccupied. I'm questioning the psychology of a neighborhood constructed with alluring, yet uninviting public spaces. I sense anxiety behind locked doors and tall fences. I will paint the walls of Keys That Fit based on my illustrations of Valencia's opulent, unsettling parks.

Open Space will be installed at Keys That Fit through July 2010, beginning with the Oakland Art Murmur first Friday event.

Visible only from the street, "KEYS THAT FIT" is an art space accessible to everyone, without the social borders that arise from having to enter a space.
